LSU running back John Emery announced Friday that he will return to the Tigers for his sixth and final season of college football.
Emery applied for graduate transfer to the NCAA in April. He spent the offseason rehabilitating from a season-ending knee injury sustained in LSU’s November victory over Florida. In 2023, he had 23 carries for 121 yards.
Emery, a five-star recruit from Destrehan High, began his LSU career in 2019-20. He rushed for 566 yards on 114 runs in his first two seasons, but academic eligibility difficulties delayed his third year and continued into the first two games of his fourth.
Emery has rushed for 1,062 career yards and 14 touchdowns.
Including Emery, LSU now has five scholarship running backs on the roster: graduate senior Josh Williams, sophomore Kaleb Jackson, sophomore Trey Holly, and rookie Caden Durham.
Holly is suspended indefinitely after being arrested in February in connection with a Union Parish shooting that injured two persons. In April, a grand jury dismissed a charge of attempted second-degree murder against him, but it did impose one felony count of illegal use of a weapon or hazardous equipment.
Holly’s attorney has said he will plead not guilty.
