The San Francisco 49ers are frequently mentioned as a team that prioritizes running backs over the rest of the league.
This is why it comes as no surprise that they are offering their star Christian McCaffrey a new hefty contract.
The 49ers announced that McCaffrey had signed an extension, but did not reveal the terms of the arrangement. According to league sources, the contract is for two years and worth $38 million. This ensures that McCaffrey remains the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
McCaffrey’s new contract includes an average annual salary of $19 million, while the league’s second-highest running back, New Orleans Saints Alvin Kamara, earns $15 million per year. McCaffrey was already the highest-paid running back according to a four-year, $64 million agreement he signed in 2020 while with the Carolina Panthers.
McCaffrey’s new agreement comes following a successful first full season with the 49ers in 2023. He concluded the regular season with 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, as well as 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven receiving scores.
During the postseason, McCaffrey helped the 49ers reach Super Bowl LVIII. He carried for 268 yards and four touchdowns, while catching 19 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown.
