Newcastle United will most likely have to offload a few first-team players this summer in order to stay under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
While crucial players like Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes are set to stay at St James’ Park, others could leave.
This includes Sean Longstaff, who continued to play an important role under Eddie Howe last season. The midfielder made 46 appearances across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing two assists.
However, with Longstaff entering the final year of his contract at Newcastle, Leicester City are apparently prepared to put the Magpies’ commitment to the test.
Leicester is preparing a bid to sign Sean Longstaff.
According to The Sunday Mirror [page 73], Leicester are preparing a £15 million bid to sign Longstaff this summer.
According to the newspaper, the Foxes have been watching the Newcastle academy product for’several months’.
It should be mentioned that, while Howe admires Longstaff, a sale would be pure profit for Newcastle due to his club training.
What Barnes has said about Longstaff amid Newcastle departure rumours
Longstaff has emerged as a crucial character under Howe in recent seasons, contributing significantly to their surprising top-four finish in 2022/23.
The 26-year-old’s work in the middle of the park frequently go unnoticed, especially with players like Guimaraes on the side.
Barnes clearly believes this, and in February labeled Longstaff as ‘underrated’.
It would be a tragedy to see Longstaff go this summer having progressing through the club’s academy system and making a significant impact in the first squad.
However, Newcastle will have to make a choice about his future, and a move to Leicester may be worth keeping an eye on following their return to the Premier League.
