Point guard Kyle Lowry of the Raptors is going about his regular business as the rest of Toronto is still in grief over Kawhi Leonard’s trade to the Los Angeles Clippers. After Leonard was acquired in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs for his longtime colleague and close friend, DeMar DeRozan, Lowry came to value and adore the superstar. Lowry isn’t worried and didn’t ask the current Finals MVP, Leonard Leonard, to stay, even though everyone in the Raptors organization and the city would have preferred to see him stay.
“Free agency is free agency,” Lowry told Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. “Paying NBA players is something I adore.” I adore the choices that men are making to ensure their happiness. You have to be happy for them at the end of the day. “It wasn’t shocking that Leonard left. I’m always thrilled for guys, especially when they enable me to accomplish something amazing. He’s a terrific man and one of my friends. He decided to return home, and I sincerely rejoice for him. You have to respect the man and be glad for him when he has the chance to spend time with his family and friends.
Reiterating his congratulations for Leonard, Lowry said he hasn’t discussed the team’s prospects for the forthcoming season with Raptors president Masai Ujiri. He called Leonard a “unbelievable friend.”
After Leonard left for the Clippers, the consensus was that the Raptors wouldn’t be able to defend their title in 2019-20, even though they should be expected to be a strong playoff team with its core, sans Leonard, returning this fall.
