The Phillies acquired Carlos Estevez from the Los Angeles Angels in a trade during Saturday’s game. Austin Hays, a former All-Star outfielder, was acquired by Philadelphia from the Baltimore Orioles a day earlier.
“I think simply the manner in which we played before in the season, assuming we had sat tight, I believe that is a group that gets an opportunity to come out on top for a big showdown,” Philadelphia director Ransack Thomson said. “We’ve just improved ourselves.”
Estevez, 31, is particularly exciting for the Phillies because he has not given up a run in any of his past 18 appearances spanning 18 innings and has 20 saves in 23 chances this season with a 2.38 earned run average.
