The most recent player to switch from the Eredivisie to Birmingham City is Alfons Sampsted.
Alfons Sampsted, a right-back for Iceland, has officially joined Birmingham City on a loan from FC Twente, with the option to buy.
Sampsted, who has moved from the Netherlands to Birmingham, reunites with his Icelandic teammate Willum Willumsson, becoming the Blues’ eleventh summer transfer window addition. The 21-cap full-back has played 24 games in the Eredivisie last season, helping Twente finish third behind PSV and Feyenoord. The full-back has spent the last two seasons with Twente.
Sampsted played a significant part in Bodo/Glimt’s journey to the quarterfinals of the Europa Conference League in 2021–22 before joining Twente. Bodo/Glimt gave the Italians a fright with a 2-1 first leg victory, but were eventually eliminated by eventual winners Roma. In the round of sixteen, Bodo/Glimt defeated AZ Alkmaar 4-3 on aggregate thanks to a goal from Sampsted in extra time.
Sampsted played both his native Sweden and his new country of Norway before to relocating there. With 30 games, the 26-year-old is the most capped under-21 player in Iceland’s history. Prior to joining Blues, he played in four other nations.
He will challenge Ethan Laird for the right-back position under Chris Davies after checking off another item on the recruitment checklist. If necessary, Sampsted is also capable of playing left back.
This summer, Sampsted will be attending Blues alongside Ryan Allsop, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Alfie May, Emil Hansson, Alex Cochrane, Willum Willumsson, Christoph Klarer, Marc Leonard, Luke Harris, and Ayumu Yokoyama.
