The Washington Commanders appear to have hit a home run, giving Dan Quinn his second chance as an NFL head coach, and the Dallas Cowboys lost out as a result.
When the Washington Commanders hired Dan Quinn, some people were unhappy with the decision.
Some believed that appointing a former NFL head coach who had already been sacked would doom the Commanders to follow suit. Of course, most head coaching tenures end in dismissal, but that wasn’t the goal.
Washington definitely made the right option by choosing experience and maturity, and those who were previously opposed are now singing a different tune. Dallas Cowboys supporters who cheered Quinn’s departure to their NFC East Division foe – albeit a smaller group than before – are now shifting their tone as well.
“What they really should have done was axe (Cowboys coach Mike) McCarthy earlier and made Dan Quinn stay,” Chris Long remarked on his Green Light with Chris Long (Yote House Media) program.
Quinn brought coach Joe Whitt Jr. with him to the Commanders to serve as defensive coordinator. That left Dallas in need of someone to lead the defense that Quinn and Whitt had helped build into one of the best in the league, and they turned to Mike Zimmer.
Some believed Zimmer would improve Quinn’s team and would never get gashed on the ground like the Cowboys did in their playoff elimination game against the Green Bay Packers.
Dallas, ten weeks into the NFL season, allows the 24th most running yards per play and the most throwing yards per play among the other 32 teams. It’s safe to assume that those expectations were not met.
Of course, Quinn would never view another coach’s or team’s failings as a success for him. Nor should he.
However, as things continue to spiral with the Cowboys, Commanders fans can’t help but look at the coaches they hired from that team and be grateful that things didn’t turn out differently. Otherwise, the Dallas team that faces Washington in Week 12 will most certainly be very different.
