Derby County boss Paul Warne believes the team is overachieving

Derby County boss Paul Warne believes his squad is overachieving based on the resources available to them.

The Rams are currently 11th in the Championship as they prepare to visit Swansea on Wednesday, marking an amazing return to the second tier after two seasons in League One.

Derby signed 17 new players this summer, including five on loan, and after previously acknowledging that there were a handful of players they were unable to sign, they mentioned Bolton forward Aaron Collins as one who eluded them owing to price.

“I saw Collins scored in the 94th minute for Bolton at the weekend – he’s a player we would have liked to sign but couldn’t afford him,” Warne told the BBC’s Derby affiliate.

“But I believe the business we’ve done, with the support of the board, has been as terrific as it could be. I become upset when people critique my players because I know how hard they work and, at times, how we overachieve.”

Derby have lost just one of their last eight Championship games and have only been beaten once at Pride Park this season.

“The lads are performing at a level that makes me very proud; would I desire a team in the top two? Yes, and we’re working on it, and everything in the club seems to be doing well,” Warne said.
