Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has stated that they are monitoring Lee Buchanan’s rehabilitation ‘day by day’.

Birmingham City are being patient with the left-back as they decide when to bring him back into the lineup.

Buchanan, 23, has yet to make an appearance this season due to injury.

In the most recent update on his situation, Davies stated, according to BirminghamLive: “Lee has been out for a long time, he has fought with various niggles and stuff. He is still making his way back day by day, and we will see how he does. It’s to help him build himself up after so many setbacks. He hasn’t suffered just one long-term injury; he’s had several. He’s just trying to establish some sort of consistency in his body through training so that it will last. We’ll attempt to get him some game experience whenever we can.”

Birmingham City will not want to rush Buchanan back in to risk making matters worse.

He will compete with Alex Cochrane for a spot in the starting lineup.

When he returns, the Blues will benefit from increased competition and defensive depth.

Buchanan moved to the Midlands in July 2023 and signed a five-year contract that runs until June 2028. He appeared in 35 games across all competitions last season, 32 of them in the league as they were relegated from the Championship.

The defender progressed through Derby County’s academy ranks, becoming a mainstay for the Rams at various youth levels before breaking into the first squad.

Buchanan went on to play 75 games as a youth at Pride Park before being tempted away by Werder Bremen.

The former England youth international spent a year in Germany, where he played 24 matches, 21 of which were in the Bundesliga.

Birmingham City then enticed him back to England, but his debut year with the Blues was unsuccessful as they were relegated to League One. They finished in the bottom three, alongside Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United.
