Ahead of Week 12, Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department recommended the Indianapolis Colts to sign former All-Pro San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga in 2025 free agency to bolster their secondary in light of the impending departure of current starter Julian Blackmon.
A week later, the scouting department moved its focus to cornerback, with Indianapolis mentioned as a possible destination for Detroit Lions’ Carlton Davis.
Davis, a seven-year veteran, was a vital player of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2021 Super Bowl winning team. During that season, he started all 14 regular-season games and had 18 pass deflections, four interceptions, 68 tackles, and three tackles for loss.
“The Colts can draw some lessons from the team that defeated them on Sunday. Specifically, Indianapolis should examine how the Lions’ secondary has been transformed from a problem to an asset. “The Lions have had some bad secondaries in recent years, but they went out and traded for Carlton Davis to allow Aaron Glenn to play more aggressively,” writes Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine.
All of those numbers (excluding pass deflections) are career highs for Davis, who only increased his pass deflection total by one the previous season. Davis never played a full season in his six years with Tampa Bay, but in his one season with the Lions, he has been in every game.
Davis has two interceptions, 10 pass deflections, 51 tackles, and two tackles for loss in 11 games for Detroit, which is 10-1.
With a Pro Football Focus (PFF) score of 73.0, he would be the Colts’ second-highest graded defensive back after Kenny Moore. Davis is now making $14.5 million in the final season of a three-year, $44.5 million contract.
In need of a third cornerback to complement Moore and the rising Jaylon Jones, Indianapolis’ front management has plenty of budget space to spend in order to sign Davis.
