Braves advised to sign projected $150 million top star by insider, former GM

The Atlanta Braves should be back to full strength by 2025, but there is one noticeable gap in their otherwise strong lineup.

With the return of Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley, the Braves now have a strong lineup at all positions. Only shortstop appears to be an issue, given Orlando Arcia’s severe troubles in 2024.

Arcia was a surprise National League All-Star two seasons ago, but he faltered down the stretch in 2023, finishing with disappointing stats. In 2024, he was one of the sport’s worst hitters, with a.218/.271/.354 slash line and 73 OPS+.

According to Major League Baseball analyst and former general manager Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Braves should go all out in free agency to address their weaknesses. He believes the ultimate Arcia replacement is available on the market: Milwaukee Brewers star Willy Adames.

“The Braves are focused on augmenting the top of their rotation, but if they aren’t able to bring back Max Fried or sign another top-of-the-rotation starter, then pivoting to the position player who best fits their roster makes sense — and Adames would be an ideal fit at shortstop,” Bowden told ESPN.

“Incumbent shortstop Orlando Arcia might shift to a utility role, allowing him to play all over the diamond. Adames, who has averaged 29 home runs per season over the last three years, would expand the Braves’ offense even further.”

Adames had a tremendous season, hitting a career-high 112 home runs and with a.794 OPS. He’s also well-known as a superb clubhouse leader, so signing him has more upside than simply his on-field performance.

Bowden also predicted Adames would sign a six-year, $150 million contract, which might complicate matters. Atlanta does not appear to be prepared to spend that much to keep Fried, so while shortstop is a major weakness, it is probable that they will balk at Adames’ asking price as well.

If Atlanta can secure Adames, they will be one of the most difficult outs in the NL playoffs in 2025. Even if they don’t, it’s the Braves, so the rest of the league will undoubtedly be watching.
