While Braves supporters wait for a major free agency signing, the club made a little move yesterday night, signing right-handed reliever Wander Suero to a minor league contract.
Suero spent portions of six seasons in the majors, pitching 193.1 innings and recording a 4.75 ERA. He most recently played for the Astros this season, but he only appeared in one game and did not record a single out.
Suero did, however, produce some impressive stats with Houston’s AAA affiliate, with a 2.66 ERA in 67.2 innings. He is also now pitching in the Dominican Winter League, where he has a 1.83 ERA over 19.2 innings.
The Braves’ bullpen is about to lose a lot of faces. A.J. Minter remains a free agent. The Braves hope to lure him back, but that is far from a guarantee. Luke Jackson and Jesse Chavez are also free agents, and Joe Jimenez will miss most of next season due to knee surgery. That’s a lot of innings that need to be replaced, and although some of it will be done internally, adding depth like Suero is essential, even if it’s not the thrilling acquisition Braves fans are hoping for.
