Jaylin Simpson, a rookie cornerback with the Indianapolis Colts, has been signed off the practice squad and added to the 53-man roster of the New York Jets.
Teams can sign players from another organization’s practice squad as long as they are added to their active roster. The Colts now have a practice squad opening that they must fill.
The Colts selected Simpson in the fifth round this past April. Although Simpson was categorized as a safety at Auburn, the Colts were impressed by his versatility, since he came to the NFL with over 900 snaps on the boundary and another 300-plus from the slot. Simpson planned to play cornerback for the Colts.
Simpson, like any other Day 3 pick, needs time to blossom. Over the summer, he shown his aggressiveness as a defender, but he struggled with deep routes. Simpson’s ability to provide special teams snaps will also play a crucial role in his Sunday contributions.
Simpson was released during roster cuts in late August and quickly signed back to the team’s practice squad, where he had spent the 2024 season to date.
I believe the Colts hoped Simpson would spend a red-shirt year on the practice squad in 2024 before moving into a larger role in Year 2, but he will now receive that opportunity with the Jets.
