On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs received a vital health update for Patrick Mahomes.
The defending Super Bowl MVP had to depart Sunday’s 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns.
That victory moved Kansas City to an NFL-best 13-1.
However, with the Chiefs seeking to become the first club in league history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, Mahomes’ late-season injury is essential to Kansas City’s title hopes in 2024.
It was initially unclear what Mahomes faced against the Browns.
Mahomes tried to pass while being hit by two defenders and clumsily bent over.
Andy Reid, Chiefs head coach, delivered an update following the game.
“Patrick’s right ankle has been hurt,” Reid stated. “It’s not broken, but it is hurting.
“He’ll get started on the rehab part of it as we go, and we’ll just have to see how he does down the road here.”
On Monday, the Chiefs got a vital update on Mahomes’ ankle.
According to NFL Network, he was diagnosed with a’mild high-ankle sprain’ after testing.
Mahomes is questionable for Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans.
The Chiefs are almost certain to be the AFC’s top seed.
Four days after facing the Texans, Kansas City will face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.
If Mahomes is kept out of the playoffs, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz might take his place.
He has previously struggled with ankle ailments and had to play through an injury during a Super Bowl victory.
With Netflix, the Chiefs, and Christmas all entwined on December 25, NFL fans believe Mahomes may miss the Texans game before returning just in time for a massive international streaming extravaganza.
“Netflix and the NFL will do everything they can to make sure he plays on Christmas,” a supporter commented.
“Only mild?” a second enthusiast wrote. “That’s the best news (and better) than what it could have been.”
“I’d sit him this week and then see how he is for the Christmas game,” a third fan suggested. “And give him limited reps so that he is ready for the most important thing: PLAYOFFS.”
Mahomes is a two-time NFL MVP with a 15-3 career record, including a lot of incredible performances.
He’ll need to be at his peak in January and February if the Chiefs are to make history.
