Andy Reid reveals Patrick Mahomes’ injury concerns which could disrupt Chiefs season

Kansas City is pursuing a third successive Super Bowl win.

The Kansas City Chiefs have dealt with a number of injuries and player absences in 2024, including Harrison Butker, Rashee Rice, and Isiah Pacheco. However, Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle injury might change everything for a club that is just a few games away from making NFL history.

Mahomes was injured in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday; given the score, head coach Andy Reid decided to pull Mahomes and replace him with backup Carson Wentz for the final few minutes of the game. With three games left in the regular season, the 13-1 Chiefs have a two-game lead over the Buffalo Bills for the top spot in the AFC playoffs — a lead that will be tested if Mahomes, who is considered “week-to-week,” misses several games.

Reid: Mahomes wanted to fight me!

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion, is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s most fierce competitors. That fury flared up again when Reid approached his star quarterback to inform him that he would be turning to Wentz on Sunday afternoon.

“He wanted to fight about it, but we’ve got good support there behind him with Carson, and it was good to get him a few reps in there too, and let our guys hear that snap count in case he has to go,” Reid told reporters about his contact with Mahomes.

Reid stated that in a different stadium and with a different score, Mahomes could have remained in the game, which must be wonderful news for the Chiefs and their “Kingdom” of fans. Even if Mahomes needs to miss a game or two before the playoffs — and his quest for a third Super Bowl title — begin next month, he told the reporters on Sunday that he has complete faith in Wentz, a former #2 overall pick who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017.

“I have a lot of trust in Carson, too,” Mahomes said. “We put him out there and I thought he did a great job moving the football, running time off the clock and putting us in a position to win the football game.”
