The Braves are still not considered in the running for a top available player this offseason.
Roki Sasaki, a Japanese starting pitching sensation, is one of the most sought-after players this offseason. In theory, the Atlanta Braves should be interested in signing him, especially since he will only cost international pool money rather than becoming a regular free agent. However, it looks that they are far from there.
Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Reports ranks Sasaki’s top ten landing spots.
Despite a compelling case for signing Sasaki, there are ten sports represented, and the Braves were not.
Meanwhile, two of its division opponents, the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies, are mentioned. The Mets are third, while the Phillies are eighth.
The Braves are still adding players, but they have yet to sign a big name. If they can’t even rank in the top third of MLB teams predicted to sign Sasaki, their chances must be slim.
Why Might the Braves Be Out on Sasaki
Let’s start with what is outside the Braves’ control. Regardless of how much Sasaki’s representative promises a smooth transition for the young pitcher, most believe he will travel to some of the country’s top markets.
The Dodgers, who recently won the World Series and have two top Japanese stars in Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, will remain the public’s favorite.
The Yankees and Mets present him with two major market choices. The Cubs also have Seiya Suzuki, a Japanese outfielder.
The most intriguing option is the Tampa Bay Rays. The explanation is that they have been rumored to be in the running and possess salary pool funds. Perhaps the Braves aren’t in the mix, which is why they’re not on the list.
A recent prospect report may explain why they aren’t. The Braves are reportedly signing top-five international prospect Diego Tornes. He is anticipated to sign for $3 million. If this is the case, the Braves will be virtually priced out of signing Sasaki.
Finally, these are forecasts, and the Braves may still be in contention. But it doesn’t appear likely. They still need a starting pitcher, but they might hunt for one on the free agent or trade market instead.
