Martyn Waghorn, former Derby County striker, is searching for a new club after being released by Northampton Town through mutual consent.

The League One team revealed the decision Friday night, after the striker made eight appearances for the club and scored one goal in a 5-2 loss to Burton Albion.

Waghorn has occasionally summarised for BBC Radio Derby and is presently awaiting his next move. The former Rangers striker was released by the Rams last summer, but he helped them win promotion from League One by scoring seven goals, including a hat-trick at Peterborough United.

Waghorn said: “I’ve loved my little stint with Northampton Town. This is a good club, and I appreciate everyone’s warm welcome. I wish everyone involved all the best in the future.

Some Northampton fans felt Waghorn had not been given a fair chance. After Jon Brady left the club earlier this month, Ian Sampson is currently leading the Cobblers as temporary manager.

“Martyn came in and helped us through the last few weeks,” explained interim manager Sampson. “All parties have now decided to end the contract, and we appreciate Martyn for his time with the club and wish him and his family all the best in the future.

“He is a first class character and a good man and we have enjoyed having him in the dressing room.”
