Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a former Chiefs first-round choice, is leaving Kansas City.
The running back stated on social media on Monday that he had been waived by the Chiefs, and the team later confirmed the decision.
“Love ya KC!” Edwards-Helaire wrote. “A family I didn’t know I needed; you made a Baton Rouge kid’s dreams come true! To Chiefs Kingdom, your love and support during difficult times will never be surpassed! “With love.”
The Chiefs picked Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd overall choice in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft from LSU. In 2019, he won the College Football Playoff national championship with teammates Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson.
Edwards-Helaire had 1,100 yards from scrimmage in 13 games as a rookie in Kansas City, but his snap count and production have since dropped.
In 2022, the 5-foot-7 rushing back lost his starting role to rookie RB Isiah Pacheco.
The Chiefs placed Edwards-Helaire on the non-football sickness list prior to the start of the 2024 season. He revealed before the season that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He hasn’t played in a game this season.
Edwards-Helaire has 1,845 running yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, 89 catches, 765 receiving yards, and seven touchdown receptions in 48 career regular-season games.
Edwards-Helaire won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs.
