Rafael Nadal has teamed up with Netflix to prepare a farewell feast for his global fan base in 2025.
Nadal retired from tennis last month after playing one final Davis Cup match for Spain, cementing his place as one of tennis’ all-time greats.
After his great adversary Roger Federer filmed a film chronicling his retirement announcement and final performance on court alongside Nadal at the 2022 Laver Cup, the Spaniard appears to be following in his footsteps now that the teaser has been out.
“Netflix and Skydance Sports have teamed up on a documentary series about the life and career of Spanish sports and tennis icon Rafael Nadal,” according to the news release.
“The series will provide unprecedented access to Nadal for his return to competitive play in the 2024 season, after missing much of 2023 owing to injury.
“The docuseries will spotlight Nadal’s sterling career, as well as his life off-the-court, showcasing never-before-seen material from Nadal’s personal archive and featuring landmark access with the tennis star, his family and his close circle of coaches and advisors.”
Zach Heinzerling (Stolen Youth, Cutie and the Boxer, McCartney 3, 2, 1), an Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner, will direct. David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, Jason Reed, and Jon Weinbach will produce the untitled docuseries for Skydance Sports.
Nadal shared his opinion on the project, which will be a film celebrating his career.
“I never thought I’d do something like this, but I got a call from David Ellison and with his words together with an amazing project they put in front of my eyes it really convinced me this was the right thing to do,” stated Rafael Nadal.
“Everyone will be able to see how my life has been throughout my tennis career, especially in the last year. It will also show how my life and tennis career have evolved over the years.
“I am confident that the final result, the docuseries, will be spectacular and will be seen all over the world. Thank you to David Ellison and his Skydance team for creating and believing in this project.
“Thank you to my family and team for allowing me to be recorded this past year; I know it wasn’t easy for any of us.
“To my colleagues and peers who have taken the time to pose for photographs. It wasn’t simple, but it was made easier by the competitions held throughout the world.
Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of Content for Spain, Portugal, and the Nordics added: “Rafael Nadal stands as one of the most influential and greatest figures in the history of sports.
“We are thrilled to share his extraordinary biography with our members, providing an intimate look into his journey to cement his legacy and become the legend he is today. It is an honor to collaborate with our partners at Skydance to commemorate Nadal’s unrivaled career.
Finding the perfect method to commemorate a truly outstanding athletic career is never easy, and Nadal will be hoping that the class he demonstrated on and off the court is conveyed in this Netflix video.
