The Chiefs face the Houston Texans in just under 24 hours.
However, the Texans recently acquired a former Chiefs player to their roster.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston, the Texans have added tight end Irv Smith Jr. to the 53-man roster.
Chiefs News: Texans Sign Former Chiefs Tight End Irv Smith Jr. to Active Roster
The Vikings drafted Smith Jr. in 2019. Smith Jr. had 66 receptions for 676 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two seasons with Minnesota. Unfortunately, Smith Jr. ended up missing the entire 2021 season due to a damaged meniscus.
Smith Jr. hasn’t been as prolific in the passing game since his return from injury. Smith Jr.’s final season with the Vikings in 2022 saw him catch only 25 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Following that season, Smith Jr. went into free agency and signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Smith Jr. caught 18 passes for 115 yards and one score while playing with the Bengals, accounting for 44% of the snaps. While Smith Jr.’s receiving stats haven’t been terrific since the injury, he has proven to be a good blocker, which is why his snap share remains quite high.
Before joining the Texans earlier this season, Smith Jr. spent the 2024 preseason with the Chiefs. Despite this, the Chiefs decided to part ways with Smith Jr. before the season due to Travis Kelce and Noah Gray.
The development of Gray this year has been great for Kansas City and their offense. He’s already recorded career-highs in receptions (37), receiving yards (420), and touchdowns (5).
While no one in Kansas City wishes Smith Jr. ill, they all hope he doesn’t have a great game this Saturday. Smith will be the Texans’ TE2 behind Dalton Schultz.
