Mahomes was a multi-talented athlete before settling on football.
Patrick Mahomes is well-known as one of the NFL’s most skilled quarterbacks.
When he was younger, the Chiefs standout was more than simply a football player. During high school, he was a brilliant basketball player who averaged more than 19 points and eight rebounds each game.
He also demonstrated his baseball abilities, as his father had previously played in the Major Leagues. As a result, he spent many hours playing with his father and may have followed a career in baseball if circumstances had been different.
While appearing in a “Would You Rather?” promotion video with Jake from State Farm, Mahomes was asked if he liked basketball or baseball as his ‘other sport’ outside of football.
Despite his family’s baseball background, Mahomes chose the hard court: “100 percent basketball.”
Mahomes was a force on the hard court
ESPN covered Mahomes’ basketball career earlier this year. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry was quoted in the paper as congratulating Mahomes on his court innovation, however he did mention that his jump shooting needed some work.
“It goes in, and it doesn’t have to be attractive. “I’m not gonna shoot like Steph,” Mahomes replied.
Mahomes, known for his on-field playmaking abilities and ability to run away from defenders, feels he honed those qualities while playing basketball.
“The skills of playing the point guard position specifically really helped me… if you watch me scrambling around, it’s the same thing,” Mahomes joked.
“I seem to be traveling slowly, but I’m getting where I need to go. And I felt like I was the same in basketball.”
