The Red Sox may have less competition for the All-Star slugger than expected.

The Boston Red Sox are seeking for a big bat to replace Tyler O’Neill on the right side of the plate.

He departed the team in free agency and joined the Baltimore Orioles this offseason. The Red Sox sorely need to add one or two righties to help balance their lineup, and Teoscar Hernández has been mentioned frequently.

Hernández played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, winning the World Series. He’s currently one of the greatest players available on the open market, and there are rumors that he wants to return to Los Angeles, despite the fact that the Red Sox have been linked to him.

While this is true, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal stated that the Dodgers are looking into other options at this time.

“As negotiations with free-agent outfielder Teoscar Hernández remain at an impasse, the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers are exploring a number of intriguing right-handed hitting alternatives,” Rosenthal said. “Hernández, 32, is seeking a three-year deal between $66 million and $72 million, according to a person briefed on the negotiations. The contract length does not appear to be a point of contention between the parties. The issue is money.

“In their pursuit of other players, the Dodgers could just be evaluating the acquisition costs against the cost of maintaining Hernández, who has frequently stated his desire to return. The club may also be planning contingencies as part of its due diligence in case Hernández leaves for the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, or another interested club.”
This may make it much easier for the Red Sox to sign the All-Star slugger. Los Angeles should not be ruled out, but Boston appears to have a shot.
