The Cardinals should give Boston a call.
He is owed approximately $74 million over the next three years, and it has been widely rumored that he is available for trade. He’s been associated to a few of teams and even shut down a trade to the Houston Astros.
The Boston Red Sox have also been linked to him, and it appears that a deal is more likely to be reached today. Boston was linked to Teoscar Hernández throughout the offseason, but he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. Boston missed out on the sweepstakes but still needs to improve its offense.
That’s where Arenado comes into play.
After Hernández, MLB.com’s Ian Browne suggested that Arenado and Alex Bregman could be the main candidates for Boston to replace the right-handed offensive void.
“Hadn’t been hearing much about Teoscar Hernández in regards to the Red Sox and now we know why,” Browne said. “He is back with the Dodgers on a three-year deal. Bregman (free agent) and Arenado (trade candidate) would seem top candidates to be Boston’s (right-handed) bat.”
Should the Cardinals call Boston? Absolutely. The Red Sox have one of the strongest farm systems in baseball and undoubtedly could provide the Cardinals a decent haul in return for the eight-time All-Star.
