Red Sox Lose $168 Million Sweepstakes for Two-Time All-Star.
The Boston Red Sox appear to be in strong pursuit of probably the greatest free agent still on the market.
Former Houston Astros star Alex Bregman is still available in free agency, and he has been the most talked-about prospective target for Boston for weeks. While this is true, the Detroit Tigers are also in the running for him.
It’s unclear where he’ll finish up, but Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein predicts he’ll sign a six-year, $168 million deal with Detroit.
“Contract Prediction: Six Years, $168 Million,” Finkelstein stated. “Team Prediction: Detroit Tigers.” According to recent reports, Scott Boras wants Manny Machado money for Alex Bregman. Given that he is about to enter his 31st season, signing a contract that lasts a decade would be somewhat surprising.
“Bregman has won four games in each of the past three seasons. He has consistently hit 25 home runs while playing strong defense at third…Many clubs make sense as landing spots for Alex Bregman, and it may wind up being a larger market team, but I still believe the Tigers should go all-in to get a player who can transform the culture in Detroit.”
Bregman is the type of talent who could help Boston compete in the American League. The Red Sox have been connected to him as a potential second-base candidate. Hopefully, they can strike an agreement.
