The Atlanta Braves were unable to get Max Fried earlier this winter, and they are also unlikely to sign Charlie Morton.
Atlanta struggled with starting pitching depth in 2024, and it could worsen in 2025.
Cody Williams from FanSided recently offered an intriguing idea to the Braves. Williams proposed that the Braves explore into trading for Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who is likely to leave Arizona this winter.
“With Burnes now in Arizona, there frankly isn’t a spot in the D’Backs rotation for Montgomery after his ill-fated signing with the club after missing spring training,” says Williams. “It was an abysmal failure for the southpaw in the desert, tossing 25 games to a 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP. The Diamondbacks front staff has made no secret of their desire to move on, but with Montgomery opting in, they will be forced to deal him.
“But that’s where the Braves might be interested. Yes, Montgomery experienced a disaster last year. However, compared to his prior three seasons, it appears to be an exception.
Montgomery would be really easy to trade for. The Diamondbacks appear to want him gone so badly that they are willing to eat a significant portion of his contract in order to trade him. It is unlikely that the Braves would lose any of their top 30 prospects.
With Montgomery’s upside as high as it is, this may not be a bad idea for the Braves to pursue.
