Derby County head coach Paul Warne believes he is “advancing” with a handful of his transfer targets now that the January transfer market is open.
The Rams are looking to add to their roster this month, with the club’s head coach hoping to increase the firepower in the last third of the ground. Derby will need to trade people out in order to bring them in, and January looks like it will be a busy month.
Warne remarked after the game against Bristol City at the weekend: “There are a couple on the list that I feel like I’m making progress with, but I also know how long it takes.”Because the window is what it is, you’re always chasing someone’s player, so they clearly make things harder.
“They clearly want to get the best deal possible for their player, so it’s never easy. That’s my view on it, which may be annoying for a fan who listens to me speak, but it’s the truth.”
Derby will now take a break from league action before moving on to the FA Cup and a trip to League One’s Leyton Orient, who are in excellent form. When asked if someone could come in before the journey to Brisbane Road, Warne replied, “I probably go on the side of not wanting to get people’s hopes up.” If I say, “Oh, we’re definitely going to have a new face in,” and then we don’t, I’ll appear like a liar.
“I usually go with the look; it’s definitely less likely than more likely, and if they come in thinking I’m not a genius, the club is. They’re trying everything they can, so it’s probably not ridiculous, but I wouldn’t lie and say it’s certainly happening since I have no idea who’s coming in Monday.
