The Boston Red Sox have already added two fascinating parts to their bullpen this summer, signing Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson, but they should not stop there.
Boston still needs additional relief help, and NESN’s Tim Crowley recently suggested that the Red Sox re-sign veteran reliever Chris Martin.
“Over the last two seasons, Martin and Kenley Jansen provided a true veteran presence in the bullpen.” Both are free agents, and who says the Red Sox can’t bring one back?
“Martin feels like the more likely reunion. He took a step back following a successful 2023 season, which earned him a Cy Young nomination. Yes, he is in his 30s, but he still throws a lot of strikes and can help capable arms mature into adults in the Red Sox bullpen. Martin may not make headlines, but he might still add value to the Red Sox by 2025.
Martin wasn’t at his best in 2024, but he’s been a pretty consistent pitcher over his career (3.38 ERA, 1.131 WHIP, and 9.3 K/9.
Boston has yet to add a right-handed reliever capable of pitching high-leverage innings, and Martin has already demonstrated his ability to fill that position, so getting him back on a short-term, low-cost contract would be an intriguing possibility.
