Breaking: Colts add former linebacker to reserve/futures contract

NFL

After signing 14 players to reserve/future contracts on Monday, the Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they had added linebacker Jacob Phillips to their roster for 2025.

These reserves/futures contracts are provided to players who are not on the 53-man roster, preventing them from negotiating or signing with another team. These accords let teams to fill out their 90-man rosters for offseason programs and training camp.

Phillips, who stands 6-3 and weighs 228 pounds, was a third-round pick from LSU in the 2020 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.

He has 687 career defensive snaps, all of which occurred between the 2020 and 2022 seasons, and 146 career special teams snaps.

According to Pro Football Focus, Phillips recorded three pressures, 49 of 55 tackle attempts, and one pass breakup in coverage in 2022, while allowing 13.2 yards per reception.

Phillips recently spent time with the Houston Texans.

The linebacker position should be on the Colts’ radar this season. While rookie Jaylon Carlies showed great promise, EJ Speed and Grant Stuard are also scheduled to become free agents this offseason. At the very least, this group’s depth and competition should be increased.
