Birmingham City watched as Wycombe missed the chance to leapfrog them at the top of the table after losing to Huddersfield.
Wycombe Wanderers missed a chance to reclaim League One leadership when they were defeated 1-0 by Huddersfield Town on Tuesday evening.
The Chairboys, who have been battling Birmingham City for first place in recent months, were defeated by a 15th-minute Herbie Kane goal and have now lost four of their previous seven games. After two more games, they trail the Blues by two points, giving Chris Davies’ side a chance to take control of the division.
However, Huddersfield boss Michael Duff believes the Terriers made a’statement’ to the rest of the league by closing to within four points of the automatic promotion positions. Huddersfield are unbeaten in six games and will meet the Blues on January 28.
Kane’s amazing strike was all that separated the two sides, as his team sat back and defended for much of the game. Wanderers put everything at Huddersfield but couldn’t break through, losing for the fourth time this season.
At full-time at Adams Park, Duff said: “It wasn’t a brilliant performance, but this is a brilliant result. A clean sheet against the league’s leading scorers is not to be taken lightly, especially given how frequently the back line has changed due to injury.
“Of course, we could have done a lot better, but we found a way, and at this time of year, it’s all about results, which is exactly what we did.
“Wycombe are the league’s highest scorers, and they have a strong team. This is a statement win that the rest of League One will have seen, and we’re in a strange position of either sliding in or rising since we’re still in fourth place.
“Today doesn’t define what we do but we’re becoming a tough nut to crack.”
Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield said his side started “a bit slow”, leading to Huddersfield’s opener, but despite going a goal down he believed “it was all us”.
It is only the second occasion this season that the Chairboys have failed to score in the league, following their 0-0 draw against Bolton Wanderers on December 20. As a result, they have only earned four points out of their past twelve.
Nonetheless, it was their third game in a week, and Bloomfield commended his team’s approach. He stated: “The positives were our dominance, as we had 13 shots in the second half while Huddersfield had none, and we kept plugging away, but we didn’t create as many as we should have.” We started slowly and then it was all up to us, but we didn’t achieve the desired results. We also maintained the ideas that we had utilized throughout the season.”
