Diego Tornes and Raudy Reyes stand out and have taken the majority of the Braves’ international signing pool money.
Tornes, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound outfielder, signed for $2.5 million and is largely regarded as one of the top five international prospects in this year’s class. At only 16 years old, he is a switch hitter with great power from both sides of the plate.
Reyes, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-handed pitcher, signed for $1.8 million and boasts the strongest arm in this year’s class, already topping 100 mph on the radar gun at the age of 16.
The two accounted for $4.3 million of the Braves’ $6.2 million in international bonus pool money this year. They’ll be players to keep an eye on in the coming years, but their age makes them extremely volatile. The players that receive the largest signing bonuses do not usually have the most successful careers.
Take Ronald Acuña Jr. as an example. He signed with the Braves for a $100,000 signing bonus and weighed 5-foot-10, 160 pounds at the time. However, it didn’t take long to realize Atlanta had discovered a jewel. He quickly soared through the prospect ranks to become baseball’s top prospect, winning the NL Rookie of the Year award and becoming one of the game’s faces before the age of 25.
