As the old saying goes, “Coaches are hired to be fired.” In that regard, there are a number of unfair allegations leveled at the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching staff, beginning with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer… and particularly when it comes to detractors of the San Francisco 49ers, Nick Sorensen is included. The Cowboys, who fired head coach Mike McCarthy and allowed incumbent special-teams coordinator “Bones” Fassel to assume the same position with the Tennessee Titans, intend to bring Sorensen to The Star. On paper? Sorensen, like first-year head coach Schottenheimer and Dallas’ plan to hire Matt Eberflus to manage the defense, is credentialed. And he is connected here. Sorensen, the 49ers’ defensive coordinator last season, collaborated with Schottenheimer in 2021 with the Jaguars, when “Schotty” was the passing game coordinator and Sorensen was the special-teams coach. They also have a Seattle connection, as Schottenheimer and Sorensen were teammates with the Seahawks from 2018-20 under Pete Carroll. Sorensen, 46, started as a defensive assistant for the 49ers in 2022 before moving on to become the team’s defensive pass game specialist and nickelbacks coach. He only served as defensive coordinator for one season, and he is no longer with the 49ers, who have recruited former Jets head coach Robert Saleh for a second term as defensive coordinator under Kyle Shanahan. So, what about the criticism that “Sorensen (or Schottenheimer, or Eberflus) is not good enough because he was fired”? Hey, those arePretty much everyone gets fired. Meanwhile, former Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer will take over as 49ers special teams coordinator.
