Mikaylah Williams scored on Thursday whenever and whenever she felt like it.
Pull-up jumpers during a change of pace? The LSU standout made those shots appear natural.
Catch-and-shoot threes in the corner? Even after Oklahoma was able to challenge them, those were also effective.
What about her rugged, DIY-inspired mid-range looks? In the Tigers’ 107-100 victory, she effortlessly lifted even those shots up and through the rim.
She remarked, “As soon as the first one fell.” “I know it is going to be a great game for me when I hit a shot early.”
Williams, Flau’jae Johnson, and Aneesah Morrow led the LSU women’s basketball team to one of its most successful offensive performances in program history in a victory over the No. 13 Sooners. The Tigers set a new team record for points scored in a game against an SEC opponent, and the three stars combined for 83 points. LSU would have tied the program’s single-game 3-pointers record (13), if it had made one more 3-pointer.
Rather, a final long-range field goal was all the No. 5 Tigers needed to win. With less than 30 seconds remaining in a one-point contest, Williams made the basket to help LSU fend off an Oklahoma squad that almost erased a 24-point advantage and won the game.
Coach Kim Mulkey remarked, “Let me tell you how I feel about Mikaylah Williams.” “She has been playing any position I ask her to play for the past month or so.”
Only one ranked team (No. 14 Maryland) has won more games this season than LSU, which has now won six of its seven games decided by 10 points or less. Williams has now helped the Tigers cross the finish line in two of those close games. On December 5, she made the free-throw-line jumper that forced overtime in LSU’s game against Stanford and then made the two 3-pointers that gave the Tigers an unlikely victory. That evening, the standout sophomore finished with 32 points after shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
