NOTTINGHAM FOREST STAR TAIWO AWONIYI DIES SUDDENLY AT 27

The world of football is in mourning following the shocking and untimely death of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi. The Nottingham Forest forward reportedly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning at his residence in West Bridgford. He was 27 years old.

According to a statement released by Nottingham Forest Football Club, Awoniyi collapsed at home just after 2:00 a.m. Emergency services were called immediately, and paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes. Despite attempts to revive him, he was later pronounced dead at Queen’s Medical Centre.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved player, Taiwo Awoniyi,” the club said in an official statement. “Taiwo was not just an incredible footballer; he was a kind, humble, and inspiring individual who touched everyone at the club with his presence. We are devastated.”

Though the cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed, early reports suggest that Awoniyi may have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 from Bundesliga side Union Berlin for a then-club record fee. He quickly became a fan favorite, known for his powerful runs, relentless work ethic, and clutch goals. He scored 10 Premier League goals in his debut season and played a key role in helping Forest avoid relegation.

Born in Ilorin, Nigeria, Awoniyi began his football journey with Imperial Soccer Academy. His talent caught international attention, and he signed for Liverpool in 2015. Due to work permit issues, he was loaned out to clubs across Europe, including Mouscron, Mainz, and Union Berlin. It was in Berlin where he truly flourished, leading to his move to the Premier League.

For the Nigerian national team, Awoniyi earned 22 caps and scored 7 goals. He was part of the squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and was expected to play a major role in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

Tributes have poured in from across the globe. Nottingham Forest captain Ryan Yates said, “This is the worst day of my career. Taiwo wasn’t just a teammate—he was my brother. He had a smile that could lift any dressing room.”

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) expressed deep sorrow in a statement: “Taiwo Awoniyi was a beacon of hope for Nigerian football. His dedication and love for the game were unmatched. We have lost a true Eagle.”

Fans gathered outside the City Ground in large numbers on Tuesday morning, leaving flowers, jerseys, and heartfelt notes in memory of the striker. The club has announced that a public memorial will be held in the coming days to honor Awoniyi’s legacy.

Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo, speaking at a press briefing, said, “This is a day none of us will ever forget. Taiwo was not just a player, he was a good man. He gave everything for this club. He will be missed dearly.”

Premier League officials confirmed that a minute of silence will be observed at all league fixtures this weekend. Nottingham Forest players will wear black armbands for the remainder of the season.

As the football world grapples with this loss, fans, players, and officials alike are united in grief. Taiwo Awoniyi’s impact went beyond goals—he represented hope, determination, and humility. Though his life was tragically cut short, his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and watched him play.

Rest in peace, Taiwo Awoniyi.
