Roger Federer has sent a heartfelt message to Rafael Nadal ahead of his retirement.

Roger Federer paid tribute to Rafael Nadal by releasing a lengthy farewell message on social media ahead of the Spaniard’s upcoming retirement. He will end his glittering career after representing Spain in the Davis Cup Finals.

Nadal will undoubtedly have an emotional week as he becomes the third member of the Big Four to retire from tennis. Federer, who withdrew from the Laver Cup two years ago, wrote a poignant greeting to his former opponent before Spain’s opening match.

Taking to X (previously Twitter), the Swiss icon wrote: “As you prepare to graduate from tennis, I have a few things to impart before I get emotional. Let’s begin with the obvious: you beat me a lot. More than I managed to defeat you.

“You challenged me like no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was walking into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to stand my ground.

“You forced me to reinvent my game, even changing the size of my racquet head in the hopes of gaining an advantage. I’m not particularly superstitious, but you took it to the next level. Your entire process. All the ceremonies.

“Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, straightening your hair, adjusting your undergarments… all with maximum intensity. I secretly enjoyed the entire experience. “Because it was so unique and so you.”

Federer went on to praise Nadal’s impressive title tally before reflecting on their years competing on the court.

“Rafa, I have to say: what an incredible run you’ve had,” he said. “Including 14 French Opens, this is historic! You made Spain and the entire tennis world proud.

“I keep recalling the memories we’ve shared. Promoting the sport together. That match will be played on half grass and half clay. Breaking the all-time attendance record by performing in front of over 50,000 people in Cape Town, South Africa.

“We are always cracking each other up. Wearing each other out on the court and then, at times, practically holding each other up during trophy ceremonies.

Federer also thanked Nadal for including him in the establishment of the Rafa Nadal Academy and letting his children to train there. He ended his speech by reflecting on his own retirement at the Laver Cup, when they played doubles together.

“It meant everything to me that you were there by my side, not as my rival but as my doubles partner,” Federer later said. “Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will remain one of the most memorable memories of my career.

“Rafa, I understand you’re focused on the final stretch of your incredible career. We’ll chat after it’s finished. For the time being, I’d like to congratulate your family and team, all of whom contributed significantly to your achievement.

“And I want you to know that your old friend is always rooting for you and will be applauding loudly for whatever you do next. Rafa that! Best wishes from your fan, Roger.”
