Ipswich eyeing “explosive” £11m star as possible Delap’s replacement

Ipswich Town have been one of the Premier League’s biggest surprises this season.

Before a ball was kicked this year, there was speculation that Kieran McKenna’s team would struggle and that their quick rise up the English football pyramid would catch up to them.

However, 11 games into the season, the Tractor Boys have eight points from five hard-fought draws and an impressive triumph away to Tottenham Hotspur right before the international break.

One of the goalscorers that day was summer addition Liam Delap, who has been nothing short of amazing for the club thus far, and if the board wants to extract even more out of him, they could try to recruit another up-and-coming player they were linked with in the summer.

Delap’s incredible form

Ipswich opted to spend roughly £20 million for Delap back in July.

While fans were aware of his ability in the Championship following his loan transfer to Hull City last season, signing him seemed hazardous given his lack of top-flight experience at City.

Some were still concerned a few games into the season, since the Winchester-born poacher had only scored once in his first five games for the club, but then, against Aston Villa in gameweek six, he made his presence known.

In his 90 minutes of football that day, the 21-year-old phenom scored twice to give his team an unexpected point, and since then, he’s added three more goals and an assist.

That means the former City star has seven goals in only 11 league appearances for the Tractor Boys this season, at an incredible average of one every 1.57 games.

It’s difficult to emphasize how successful Delap has been at Portman Road this season, but the board could improve him even more if they make an effort to get another 21-year-old star who has been a creative spark in the Championship this year.

The Championship gem Ipswich should sign

So, the player in question is West Bromwich Albion star Tom Fellows.

Interestingly, there appears to be some uncertainty regarding whether Ipswich were interested in him over the summer, with Football Insider reporting that they initiated conversations about a potential £11 million deal, while other reports indicate there was no interest at all.

Whatever the truth is, the Tractor Boys should be interested in the promising 21-year-old, who was impressive last season and has only improved this season.

For example, in 38 appearances for the Baggies last year, the “explosive” wideman, as football talent evaluator Jacek Kulig characterized him, scored five goals and assisted four times, amounting to one goal per 4.22 games.

However, this season has seen the Solihull-born jewel become significantly more of a creator, and as of now, he has five assists in just 15 outings, which equates to one every three games.

This propensity to generate chances from the right side would make him an excellent colleague for Delap, as Leif Davies currently has the most assists in the Ipswich squad with two, while Omari Hutchinson is the most productive right-sided player with one.

Ultimately, it may be a difficult transfer to complete, but considering his creative abilities and what that could mean for Delap, they should do everything possible to get Fellows to Portman Road in 2025.
