Tottenham Hotspur have selected Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna as their top target if Ange Postecoglou is fired, FootballTransfers has learned.
McKenna, 38, has greatly impressed since taking over as Ipswich manager in December 2021, guiding the Tractor Boys to consecutive promotions over the last two years.
This summer, the Northern Irishman was extensively connected with Chelsea and Manchester United, but he chose to sign a new contract with Ipswich, with his current agreement at Portman Road continuing until 2028.
However, FootballTransfers knows that McKenna has been identified as a potential alternative for Postecoglou at Tottenham.
The Spurs manager was booed by fans after their 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Thursday, and we have been told that he might be fired if things do not improve by January.
The north London team has only won one of its last six games in all competitions, a 4-0 thrashing of Manchester City, and McKenna has been named as the club’s primary target.
The Ipswich manager spent seven years in Tottenham’s academy before being having to leave early due to a major hip injury. After serving as the club’s Head of Academy Performance Analysis, McKenna was appointed Spurs’ U18 head coach in 2015.
The Northern Irishman was signed by Manchester United the following year and later became Jose Mourinho’s assistant manager at Old Trafford.
Ange Postecoglou responds to Tottenham fans
Following Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Bournemouth, Postecoglou met a gathering of Spurs fans who were keen to express their displeasure with their team’s recent defeats.
“I didn’t like what was said because I’m a human being, but you’ve got to cop it,” Postecoglou admitted in his pre-match press conference before of Tottenham’s home game against Chelsea this weekend.
“I’ve been around long enough to understand the aggravation and disappointment that comes with things not going as planned.
“They’re rightfully disappointed tonight because we let a game of football slip away from us. I’m fine with that. They provided me with direct feedback, which I believe was taken into consideration.
“All I can say is, I’m really disappointed with tonight and I’m determined to get it right and I will keep fighting until we do.”
