Derby County manager Paul Warne has stated that Crystal Palace loanee David Ozoh is expected to continue for the duration of his loan, despite his injury troubles.
Derby County had a busy summer transfer window as they prepared for the promotion to League One football.
The Rams used the transfer market to sign Jacob Widell Zetterstrom and Kenzo Goudmijn. However, more clever loan deals and free transfer signings were made.
Crystal Palace midfielder David Ozoh was one of the players brought in on a temporary basis, and he instantly made an impression at Pride Park with some good displays in his first five appearances. However, the 19-year-old has been out since September due to a hamstring ailment and quad damage.
Due to Ozoh’s injury troubles, some have questioned his future with Derby County.
Now, as January approaches, Rams manager Paul Warne has provided some clarification. Speaking to Derbyshire Live, he stated that Spanish-born Ozoh will remain for the duration of the campaign, as per the conditions of the initial loan deal between the two teams.
“It is a season-long loan,” Derby County manager Warne said.
“But clearly, if it wasn’t working out and his leg had fallen off and would take six years to heal, both clubs would (speak) with the player’s permission.
“But that’s not the case. I believe Crystal Palace is pleased with the attention we are providing the player, but sadly, injuries happen, and we have simply been unlucky.”
The wait continues
Ozoh’s return to Derby County colours has been eagerly anticipated since he was first sidelined. The midfielder impressed early on, protecting the backline in defensive midfield.
Many were eager to see what he might produce over the course of a whole season after witnessing his talent in the early stages of his senior career. Unfortunately, injury has ruined his promising start, but Ozoh still has plenty of time to make an impact at Pride Park when he returns.
Warne has been reticent to provide a comeback date for the midfielder, so it is unclear when he will be able to return to play.
In his absence
Fortunately for Derby County, they have plenty of midfield depth to cover for Ozoh’s absence and any other injured players at Pride Park.
Liam Thompson has joined the team, along with Ebou Adams, Goudmijn, and Ben Osborn, who all provide their skills in the middle of the park. Darren Robinson and other academy grads will also be on hand to offer assistance if necessary.
The Rams certainly use a boost after going five games without a win and losing three in a row, but the continued uncertainty surrounding Ozoh’s return means Warne and supporters will have to wait for such a gift.
On the plus side, there appears to be optimism that Palace will not bring Ozoh back early, despite his problematic first half of the season.
