The Boston Bruins have experienced an up and down season.
With poor goaltending from Jeremy Swayman, weak offense at times, and a coach fired. And the Bruins are only 30 games into their season. Forward Trent Frederic is one player whose fate must be decided before the trade deadline. Frederic has the talent set to be a Bruins fan favorite, but his performance this season has been disappointing. He’s in the final year of his deal, which pays $2.3 million every campaign.
With speculations that the Bruins may have problems agreeing on a first-round pick in 2016, teams have approached the club about a possible deal. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Boston’s ongoing hesitation on Frederic may necessitate a trade.
Benders: Jeremy Swayman has been BAD, why?
“Whatever the Bruins’ intentions are here,” Friedman said. “They are getting a lot of calls about him. He’s the kind of player playoff teams are going to want. He’s a good teammate, he’s competitive… he’s a very popular teammate and willing combatant.”
Frederic had a breakout year in the 2023-24 season, scoring 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points, all career highs. However, the St. Louis native has struggled this season, scoring only five goals, assisting six times, and posting a minus-13 rating. Frederic had two two-goal games this season, scoring in only three games.
Friedman mentions the Blues as a potential trading partner for Frederic and the Bruins. Frederic is willing to play in his hometown, and the Blues have done everything necessary to enhance their club.
“There’s a lot of people wondering if that’s what’s in his future,” Friedman said. “There’s a lot of time between now and then, we’ll see where this goes.”
Aside from the Blues, numerous teams are allegedly interested in the gritty winger, potentially increasing his transfer value. Typically, the Bruins stick to their core players. However, after losing Jake DeBrusk to free agency this past offseason, the team may want to acquire some assets if Frederic is out of their price range.
