Former third-round pick Ambry Thomas was dismissed by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday as part of a series of roster moves.
The Indianapolis Colts claimed Thomas, a University of Michigan cornerback, on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Thomas remained on San Francisco’s first 53-man roster despite a difficult preseason that was exacerbated by an injury. Thomas was soon placed on injured reserve after suffering a broken forearm in the team’s preseason opener. He was not activated before being placed on waivers.
Thomas is set to become an unrestricted free agency this summer following an up-and-down career in the Bay Area.
As a rookie, he went into the starting lineup and sealed his postseason berth by intercepting Matt Stafford in overtime of a Week 18 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. He missed out on a starting spot in Year 2 and started none of the 15 games he played. Last season, he was in and out of the starting lineup as a third cornerback as the club tried to establish consistency in the secondary.
After training camp and the preseason, he was out of work in 2024. Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir secured two starting positions, while Isaac Yiadom and rookie Renardo Green were the clear third and fourth CBs, in that order. Thomas stayed as an interior depth piece that San Francisco never required.
Thomas appeared in 42 games for the 49ers, including 11 starts, and recorded 79 tackles, 12 pass breakups, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He will now get a fresh start with the Colts, who also signed former 49ers CB Samuel Womack after he was released during final cuts.
