Red Sox Expected To Land $72.5 Million All-Star In Blockbuster Trade

Can the Red Sox pull off this stunning trade?

What do the Boston Red Sox want to do to complete their starting rotation this winter?

Even after the Garrett Crochet trade, it appears that the Red Sox still consider themselves to be one arm short of their ideal rotation. It makes sense; relying on five starters to pitch entire, healthy seasons is no longer realistic.

Major League Baseball is still buzzing with news of Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow’s aggressive trade market strategy. That is excellent news, but who is Breslow’s next target? Most importantly, are they attainable?

Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners is becoming a more attractive choice by the day. He’s a three-time All-Star but the most expensive pitcher on his own team, and while his 3.64 ERA last season may have led some to feel he’s past his prime, he’s still stacking up valuable innings.

On Friday, Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report anticipated that the Red Sox would make a blockbuster trade for Castillo, who is under contract for the next three seasons with a fourth year vesting option.

“Castillo’s fastball has been one of the most important pitches in baseball over the past two seasons. He’s also an iron man, having made at least 30 starts five times in his eight years in the majors,” stated.

“Even with $72.5 million remaining on his contract, Castillo may have enough value on his own to attract a quality bat for Seattle’s attack. Perhaps even a fantastic one, if the club is ready to absorb some of his deal.”

When it comes to Seattle as a trade partner, the return is likely to begin with a big-league-ready bat. Triston Casas and Wilyer Abreu have been mentioned frequently, as has Jarren Duran’s name, but trading the Red Sox’s team MVP from last season makes little sense.

At some point this summer, Seattle may be desperate enough for offense that trade for Abreu is the best choice, while also avoiding a significant amount of the Castillo contract. This might benefit the Red Sox.
