With a postseason place on the line, the Indianapolis Colts may be forced to rely on Joe Flacco in Week 17.
Anthony Richardson, the second-year quarterback, has not been able to practice this week due to back and foot problems. On Friday, the Colts categorized their starter as “questionable” for their Week 17 game against the New York Giants.
When reporters questioned Colts head coach Shane Steichen if Richardson might have been limited in practice, Steichen stated the 22-year-old “was just sore all week,” so the club opted to play it safe.
At 7-8, the Colts still have a chance to make the playoffs as the AFC’s No. 7 seed with two victories in their last two games and some help from the Miami Dolphins and the Denver Broncos’ next two opponents, the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs.
If Richardson has to miss Week 17’s game against the Giants, Indianapolis will rely on Flacco, a 39-year-old veteran, to keep its playoff hopes alive.
What happened to Anthony Richardson?
It’s unclear when Richardson sustained the back and foot injuries that have kept him out of the Colts’ practices this week. When asked for more information, Steichen only stated that the back injury was more severe.
Indianapolis did not practice on Wednesday since it was Christmas, but Richardson was listed as “DNP” with the back and foot issues on the estimated injury report the Colts put out.
