The Red Sox have the means to get the deal done
If the Boston Red Sox can add a key element to their attack, they have a very good chance of returning to the playoffs in 2025.
With the additions of Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, Boston’s rotation is already one of the finest in baseball on paper. Both might be All-Stars by 2025, not to mention Tanner Houck. The Red Sox rotation should terrify opponents, but the offense also requires improvement.
Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado are the two most talked-about options for Boston lately. It would not be surprising if the team chose one of these choices before spring training begins.
Arenado would be the less expensive choice monetarily, but Boston would also have to trade players for him. Bregman would be ideal, but there have recently been speculations that he is looking for a deal for around $200 million.
Anything might happen, and Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer predicts that Boston will eventually sign Arenado.
“Just as a reminder, where Arenado wants to play matters,” Rymer told the crowd. “The 33-year-old’s contract includes a full no-trade clause, which he has already used to block a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Houston Astros.” They’re no longer on the board after improving their infield corners, and Arenado’s initial preferences for non-Boston teams don’t appear to be particularly realistic.
“It’s unclear how interested the Red Sox are, though recent comments from chief baseball officer Craig Breslow indicate that Rafael Devers isn’t necessarily in Arenado’s way at third base…In other ways, the Red Sox are a good fit for Arenado, not least because of his right-handed pull power, which would play well at Fenway…Prediction: Arenado will finish up in Boston, with the Cardinals spending some money to boost their prospect return.
If the Red Sox bring Arenado to town, expect more adjustments. However, he is a Hall of Fame-caliber player owed only $74 million over the next three seasons. If that could be paid down, it would make the offer much better. Perhaps this will actually happen.
