After season Gary Shaw, a former striker for Aston Villa, passed away at the age of sixty-three, the club confirmed.
Shaw played for Villa, who won the European Cup the next year in addition to winning the First Division championship in 1981.
The forward, who previously had stints at Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, and Shrewsbury, was hospitalized following a recent fall that resulted in a brain injury.
According to a statement from the Villa, “The European Cup-winning hero Gary Shaw’s passing has stunned and devastated the entire Villa Football Club.
“One of our own, Gary was a gifted striker who thrilled fans by lighting up the scoreboard and propelling Villa to glory in the 1980s. Individual recognition would also come for a player who many in the terraces looked up to.
“He died quietly in the company of his family earlier today, and they requested that Aston Villa issue a statement on their behalf.
“Everyone at the club is thinking of Gary’s family and loved ones during this very trying time.”
Shaw, who was born in Solihull, started out as an apprentice at Villa and went on to score 79 goals in 213 games, including 20 in their championship season. at his efforts, he was awarded PFA Young Player of the Year.
Later, he played a significant role in the 1982 European Cup winning squad that defeated Bayern Munich in the championship game. Shaw scored three goals during the tournament, one of which came against Dynamo Kyiv in the quarterfinals.
Before retiring in 1992, he had already traveled to Denmark, Austria, and Hong Kong throughout his career, having departed Villa in 1988.
Later on, he represented Villa on matchdays as an ambassador and statistics analyst.
