The Atlanta Braves have already lost All-Star pitcher Max Fried.
It was expected throughout the summer and became a reality when the New York Yankees unexpectedly signed him to an eight-year, $218 million contract.
He may not be the only key member of the Braves’ 2024 starting rotation who will pitch elsewhere in 2025. David O’Brien of The Athletic said that Charlie Morton is unlikely to return in free agency.
“Charlie Morton began his career with the Atlanta Braves and hoped to end it with them, too,” according to O’Brien. “However, for the time being, that appears doubtful. The 41-year-old free agent wants to continue pitching in 2025, but there have been no recent contract talks between Morton and the Braves, where he spent the previous four seasons.
“According to league sources, the Braves are looking to solve a variety of needs, including a corner outfielder, a back-end reliever, and even a middle-rotation starter. The team’s interest in Morton appears to have diminished, or at least been set aside. Morton is reportedly open to offers from other organizations.”
Morton got $20 million with the Braves last season and is still available in free agency. Unfortunately, it appears that his next deal may be with another organization. He has spent the last four years with the Braves, and that tenure may be coming to an end.
