BREAKING NEWS: NASCAR Legend Richard Petty Is Dead at 87

In a somber moment for the world of motorsports, Richard Petty — the legendary NASCAR driver affectionately known as “The King” — has passed away at the age of 87. His family confirmed the news earlier today in a heartfelt statement, marking the end of an era in American racing history.

“Richard lived his life like he raced — with determination, heart, and an unwavering love for the fans,” the Petty family said in a press release. “He was more than a racing icon. He was a beloved father, grandfather, friend, and patriot. We appreciate all the love and support during this difficult time.”

A Life Lived in the Fast Lane

Born on July 2, 1937, in Level Cross, North Carolina, Richard Lee Petty was destined for greatness in the racing world. The son of NASCAR pioneer Lee Petty, Richard carved out his own legacy with an unparalleled 200 career wins — a record that still stands decades later. Known for his signature No. 43 car and iconic cowboy hat and sunglasses, Petty was the face of NASCAR through its formative years and helped bring stock car racing into the national spotlight.

Petty’s career spanned from 1958 to 1992, during which he won seven NASCAR Cup Series championships — a record he shares with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson. He was the winner of the prestigious Daytona 500 a record seven times and was inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.

Tributes Pour In

Following the announcement of his death, tributes began pouring in from across the motorsports world and beyond.

NASCAR Chairman Jim France released a statement saying: “Richard Petty was the soul of NASCAR. He brought class, competitiveness, and charisma to the sport. His legacy will forever be etched into the DNA of American motorsports.”

President of NASCAR Steve Phelps added: “No one embodied the spirit of NASCAR more than Richard Petty. His influence on the sport is immeasurable, and his impact will be felt for generations.”

Fellow drivers, including Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, and Joey Logano, shared their condolences on social media, calling Petty an inspiration and a true ambassador of the sport.

Beyond the Track

Petty’s influence was not limited to racing. He was a successful businessman, philanthropist, and even ventured into politics, running for North Carolina Secretary of State in 1996. Through the Petty Family Foundation, he supported numerous charitable efforts, particularly those aimed at children and veterans.

After retiring from racing, Petty remained active in NASCAR through his team, Richard Petty Motorsports, and was a familiar presence at races, always ready with a smile, autograph, or story for fans.

In recent years, Petty’s health had been a topic of concern, though he continued to make occasional public appearances. His last major appearance was at the 2025 Daytona 500 in February, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

A Legacy Cemented in History

Richard Petty’s name is synonymous with NASCAR. His achievements on the track, his larger-than-life persona, and his unwavering dedication to the sport have made him a cultural icon. From small-town tracks in the Carolinas to the grandstands of Daytona and Talladega, Petty’s name elicited admiration and respect.

He is survived by his son Kyle Petty, a former NASCAR driver and current racing analyst, as well as several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

As the racing world mourns the loss of a true legend, one thing is clear: Richard Petty was not just “The Kin

g” of NASCAR — he was the heart of it.
